BIO:
Oleksandra Matviichuk is a dedicated human rights advocate who concentrates her efforts on Ukraine and the OSCE region. Currently, she holds leadership positions in two significant organizations: as the head of the Center for Civil Liberties, she focuses on safeguarding human rights and promoting democracy across the OSCE region through legislative initiatives, public oversight of law enforcement and the judiciary, youth education, and international solidarity programs. Simultaneously, she coordinates the Euromaidan SOS initiative group, which emerged in response to the violent suppression of a peaceful student protest in Kyiv in 2013. Throughout the subsequent Revolution of Dignity, thousands of volunteers, led by Matviichuk, provided critical legal assistance and aid to those facing persecution. This effort has evolved to monitor political persecution in occupied Crimea, document war crimes in the Donbas conflict, and champion the “LetMyPeopleGo” campaign for the release of political prisoners held by Russia.
Matviichuk’s expertise extends to establishing inclusive frameworks for mass human rights engagement in the face of rights infringements, and her extensive experience in documenting violations during armed conflicts underlines her commitment. She is the author of several alternative reports presented to international bodies like the UN, Council of Europe, European Union, OSCE, and the International Criminal Court. Recognizing her significant contributions, she was honored in 2016 with the Democracy Defender Award for her exceptional efforts in advancing democracy and human rights, an accolade conferred by OSCE missions.
