Olena Zerkal

BIO:

Olena Volodymyrivna Zerkal, known as Lana Zerkal, is a distinguished Ukrainian diplomat who served as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Integration from 2014 to 2019. Her extensive career includes significant roles within the Ministry of Justice, where she served as the Director of International Law, the Director of the State Department on Approximation of Legislation, and the Director of the Department of Liaison with State Authorities for 12 years.

Zerkal graduated from the Law Faculty of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 1998 and holds a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations obtained in 2008. Her linguistic abilities encompass fluent English and basic French. She contributed extensively to Ukraine’s integration efforts, playing a pivotal role in negotiations surrounding the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. Zerkal’s diplomatic tenure also saw her representing Ukraine in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, notably addressing the case accusing Russia of supporting international terrorism and human rights violations in occupied territories, including Crimea and parts of Donbas.
