BIO:
Maria’s journey in human rights activism began as a volunteer for the Euromaidan SOS initiative during the Euromaidan protests. Since then, she has been actively involved in documenting human rights violations in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea under Russian occupation, sharing this information within Ukrainian society and with the international community.
In 2014, Maria focused on cases of Ukrainian citizens arrested by Russia on political grounds, leading the LetMyPeopleGo campaign to secure their release. She co-founded the NGO Media Initiative for Human Rights, conducting investigative journalism on human rights violations stemming from the Russian aggression in conflict-affected regions. Maria’s efforts in defending human rights in Ukraine earned her a national human rights prize in 2017. With a Master of Jurisprudence from Loyola University Chicago, she continues to advocate for the release of Ukrainians illegally held by Russia and engages in international advocacy with intergovernmental organizations and governments.
